The month of May has long been dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Diocese is encouraging families, schools, and individuals to mark this time by setting up a May Altar in the home.
This tradition, once widespread across Ireland, is simple to revive. A small space is prepared—a shelf, windowsill, or table. A statue or image of Our Lady is placed at the centre. Candles and fresh flowers, often gathered by children, are added. The altar becomes a quiet place of prayer throughout the month, and a daily reminder of Mary’s presence and care.
The Diocese is inviting families to take a few moments at the beginning of May to set up their altar together and to use a short, child-friendly prayer service, included below.
Short Family Prayer for the May Altar
All gather where the altar will be set up.
Leader (parent or older child):
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
This month we remember Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
She trusted God, loved deeply, and stayed with Jesus to the end.
We ask her to be close to our family during this month of May.
Place the statue or image of Mary.
Leader:
Mary, we place you here in our home.
Stay with us through our days—when we are happy, when we are worried, and when we pray.
Light a candle (with adult supervision).
Leader:
We light this candle as a sign of our love and prayer.
Mary, shine your light in our family. Help us to follow Jesus.
Place flowers. Children can take turns.
Leader:
We bring these flowers for you, Mary.
Help us to grow in kindness, patience, and love—just as you did.
All together:
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Leader:
Mary, Mother of Jesus, pray for us.
Mary, Mother of families, watch over our home.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
