The situation in Gaza is heartbreaking. The horrendous loss of human life is beyond words. The destruction of property is frightening. Families have been torn apart, children are starving, and people are being denied even the most basic human dignity. Like many, I have heard from parishioners who feel horrified, overwhelmed, and powerless.
I fully support the call of the Irish Bishops for prayer and fasting on Friday 6 June, the First Friday of June, as a day of solidarity with all who are suffering in the Holy Land. June, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is a time to turn again to the source of compassion, mercy, and justice.
I encourage all parishes to mark this day in a real and prayerful way – with Mass, Adoration, quiet prayer, or fasting – and to carry this intention throughout the month of June. Let us not turn away. Let us not grow numb. Let us place this terribly wounded part of our world into the wounded heart of Christ.
