advent candlesAdvent: the Word of God

Once again we enter Advent, the time of preparation for the birth of Jesus. It is a time of reflection, rejoicing, and expectation.
Still living in ‘pandemic times’ and the inevitable consequences this continues to have for us as individuals and Church, we never cease to hope.
Over four evenings we will focus on the Word of God that encourages us to look forward in uncertain times with the certainty that things really do make sense, regardless of how they turn out.

Bible Basics for Today's World: Part 1 (online weekly until 9 November 2021)

So many of us are afraid to open the Bible. We feel that understanding it is beyond us – without a degree or two in Sacred Scripture!

Nothing could be further from the truth. The Bible is God’s Word to God’s people, to us, and it should always be approached from this perspective.
During this introductory series we will begin to deepen our appreciation of Scripture, while keeping it explainable and understandable – because without this basic understanding, how can we ever hope to hear and understand God speaking to us today as individuals, as community, as Church?

The course is open to all, but requires registration at pastoral@galwaydiocese.ie
A Zoom link will be forwarded each week to all participants along with relevant notes.

The series is facilitated by Fr Gerard McCarthy, SVD.illustration of open bible

The Living Word at Easter

Galway Diocesan Pastoral Outreach Zoom Programme: 6 April – 11 May 2021

image of sunset with text overlaidIn Lent we journeyed through the Passion narrative in Mark’s Gospel. However, we must never forget that God’s plan for Jesus was always resurrection! Paul reminded the early Christians that we preach Christ crucified AND risen.

For six Tuesday evenings online, beginning on Easter Tuesday, we continue our journey with the Risen Christ by focusing on the Easter Gospel passages in all four Gospels. Don’t worry if you were not able to join us  during Lent; join us now and discover how the Resurrection changed everything for those first followers of Jesus and experience the impact that it can have on our own lives, on our own faith journey.

These are not ‘academic’ evenings, but an opportunity to grow in our understanding of God’s word and how it can transform our lives.

The sessions will be facilitated by Fr Gerard McCarthy SVD. There will be time for questions and discussion in each session. Scripture texts and supporting material will be provided.

The course runs online via Zoom for six Tuesday evenings from 6 April to 11 May 2021.

Galway Diocesan Pastoral Outreach Zoom Programme: 23 February – 23 March 2021

Mark’s Gospel was the first of the Four Gospels to be written. On five Tuesday evenings during five weeks online, facilitated by Fr Gerard McCarthy SVD, we will journey through the Passion narrative of this Gospel, attempting to grow in our understanding of the final days of Jesus, leading to the great event of the Resurrection.

These sessions are not ‘academic’ and it is not necessary to have attended other Bible courses in the past. More than anything the sessions are an attempt to discover the power of God’s Word and the tremendous influence it can have on our lives once we open ourselves to it in faith and hope.

There will be time for questions and discussion in each session. Scripture texts and supporting material will be provided.

The course runs online via Zoom for five Tuesday evenings from 23 February to 23 March 2021.
